The origin of the Oostendorp family

Oostendorp (literally translated: East village) was an old dominion property of the Lords of Ahaus, and was feudally subordinate to the Blanckenborch at Haaksbergen (a small town in the Twente region in the East of the Netherlands). August 13, 1393 Ludolf of Ahaus reserved for himself in a wedding contract with his son-in-law Sweder of Voorst and Keppel: "die Blanckenborch myt ere toebehoor ende alle denstluden ende gude, dee in den Kerspel van Heckesberghe gelegen sind" (the Blackenborg with all that belongs to it and all its serfs and goods, that are located in the Kerspel of Haaksbergen). September 16, 1449 Ludolf's descendant Reinold van Roer sold the house Blanckenborch, with all that belonged to it to Rudolph of Diepholt, bishop of Utrecht. In both contracts Oostendorp (nor any of the other farmyards in Haaksbergen that became property of the diocese Utrecht) was not mentioned by name. The last bishop-sovereign of Utrecht, Hendrik of Bavaria, sold his worldy goods in 1528 and handed over his secular rule to Charles V, Lord of the Netherlands, King of Spain, and emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. February 12, 1528 the inhabitants of the province of Overijssel, of which Twente is a part, were discharged from their allegiance to the bishop of Utrecht, and Charles V became lord of Overijssel and owner of all episcopal belongings.

In the meantime, the first record of Oostendorp was made in the tax register of Twente in 1475. It was mentioned as "Ostendorp in the Langeler buurtschap of the Kerspel of Hakesberghe". The farmyard Oostendorp payed a tax of 2 oude schilden and 3 golden Rhineland guilders. According to the tax register of 1495 the farm was burned that year and in 1499 the inhabitants were paupers (needy).

The Oostendorper watermolen

Other records of Oostendorp can be found in the accounts of the imperial supervisors:

• 1547-1553 The water mill of Langelo has been leased to the miller Johan ten Oostendorp. From him the water mill took the name Oostendorper watermolen. It still exists, and still carries that name.
• 1554-1560 The water mill has been leased to the widow of Johan ten Oostendorp.
• 1571-1576 The farm Oostendorp pays a yearly tax of 12 stuivers service money (by way of feudal services; the so-called Deventer voeren), 2 golden guilders "year money" (for inheritance) and 11 golden guilders rent, a total of 19 pounds and 18 stuivers. Furthermore the farm pays tithes to the monastery of St. Peter in Utrecht and 2 mud rye to the heirs of Twente. Tenant of the farm is Albert ten Oistendarp, who has been traced down to be the ancestor of many present day Oostendorps.

Although it is possible that Johan ten Oostendorp, apart from miller, was also a farmer at the nearby farmyard Oostendorp, this can not be proved, nor can his relation to Albert ten Oostendorp be established. As a result, the genealogical tree of the Oostendorp family starts with the latter. His first name, Albert, was given to many children in the Oostendorp family over the next 2 centuries.

4. Jenneken ten Oistendarp; married to Claes ten Groothuisz. Farmer at Groothuis in Brammelo. It is also possible that her name was Jenneken Elckinck, and that she was a daughter of Reint; the record (dated September 4, 1665, see below) is not clear on this point.

• Leasing records, 1600/1602 Oostendorp has been laid waste (as a result of the military operations in the 80 years war, the Dutch war of independence against Spain, 1568-1648).

• Court records Haaksbergen, January 10, 1631 Berndt ten Oistendarp is veertiene (member of the council of fourteen, the council of the Kerspel) of Haaksbergen.
• Court records Haaksbergen, February 18, 1633 Berndt is representative of the farmers of Langelo.
• September 4, 1665 "Hendrik ten Vaerwerck, geboren op 't Oistendarp en Aele, Reint Elckinck met zoon Jan, Claes ten Grotenhuisz met vrouw Jenneken, verder Bernd toe Linteloe met vrouw Griete Elckinck, item Engele Elckinck geassisteerd met haar vader Reint voorzegd, welke Reint mede caveert voor zijn kranke dochter Hermken en zijn onmondige dochter Trine neffens de voorzegde kinderen geprocreerd bij wijlen Aele ten Oistendarp, voor wie mede compareren Hendrick ten Vaerwerck en Gerdt Elckinck als ooms en momber van Trine, hebben op 16 juli 1655 aan zwager, broeder en oom Albert ten Oistendarp en vrouw Stine de naletenschap van vader en moeder Berndt en Fenne ten Ooistendarp verkocht."

• Court records Haaksbergen, May 6, 1699 Berend ten Oostendorp passes his farming rights over to his brother Albert ten Oostendorp. From this record we must conclude that Berend, for one reason or another (presumably illness), was not capable of farming the land. Probably Albert himself died shortly after this, as it turns out that Jan ten Schootkate, husband of Berendje ten Oostendorp, was the succeeding farmer.

Berendje ten Oostendorp

• Married in Haaksbergen, January 25, 1701 to Jan ten Schootkate, son of Geert ten Schootkate, from Stepelo.
• Jan ten Schootkate became farmer at Oostendorp in Langelo, and hence was named Jan ten Oostendorp from then on.

Children:

1. Harmken ten Oostendorp; married in Haaksbergen, July 21, 1728 to Gerrit Lankheet, son of Roelof Lankheet, from Langelo. He is a protestant, she is a catholic. Their children receive a catholic baptism, despite the oath on mixed marriages.
2. Albert ten Oostendorp; married in Haaksbergen, July 11, 1739 to Sara Margaretha Lansink, widow of Jan Wolterink, son of Geert Wolterink (married November 11, 1730), an remarried in Haaksbergen, December 22, 1740, to Maria Assink from Langelo. The first to marriages produced no children. From the last marriage 10 children received catholic baptism between june 21, 1742 and November 24, 1762. They all received Wolterink as their last name, as Albert was farmer at Wolterink in Buurse.

• Farmer at Hones near Haaksbergen. The priest entered the names of their children at baptism commonly as "Oostendorp nunc Saatnoordick", but most of the children retained Oostendorp as their last name.

With the entries of his marriages in the records it was annotated that he was a son of Gerrit Oostendorp and Maria Saatnoordik and a grandson of Hendrik Oostendorp and Anna Woltgerink and of Gerhardus Saatnoordik and Hermina Saatnoordik. This is in correspondence with the data in this genealogy.
